This guide discusses the processes involved in helping students with cognitive disabilities such as mental retardation find and keep a job. Following an introduction, the guide discusses the types of employment available for these youth and young adults in competitive and supported employment settings. The following section looks at the roles of people involved in the process including parents, transition specialists, rehabilitation counselors and development specialists, friends, and employers. Specific suggestions for the job search are organized into those students concerned with planning for transition and job search methods. Suggestions for employers are also offered and include the importance of making appropriate accommodations and providing natural support services. A resource guide is attached that is organized into the following categories: self-determination and self-advocacy; transition planning and employment; employer materials; providing supports and accommodations in the workplace/supported employment; and videos for employers and students. Also included are a list of organizations providing information on transition and/or employment and a list of publishers. (DB)
